L-Lopes Get 1st District Win

Basketball Round-up

Published Dec. 14, 2011 @ 6:22 p.m.

ANTELOPE ARENA - With the score tied at 24 and 1:34 remaining in the third period, guard Haily Berry released a go ahead shot from the top of the three-point circle and Coach G's Lady Lopes went on to hold off the Coahoma Bulldogettes to pick up their first District 3-2A win, 46-34.

Defense was the key to the Post win.  "The girls really stepped it up in the second half defensively; scoring 6 of the 15 third quarter points off steals & transition offense," observed Head Coach Patricia Gutierrez.

"This team (Post) did a great job coming from behind to win convincingly," said Gutierrez.   The Lady Lopes, now 1-1, play another district game at Denver City on Friday with a 6:30 p.m. tip-off.  The girls and boys varsity games will be carried on Post Sports Radio.

In the final period, Post's half-court trap defense kept Coahoma on edge.  Shortly after Berry's timely 3-pointer, the L-Lopes top scorer Taylor Osborn sank two free throws.  Seconds later she fell to the floor in pain with a knee injury and never returned to the game.  The status of the injury is unknown at this time.  Osborn left the game with 8 points.

Without the sophomore leader, the Lady Lopes continued as if they were playing to win for Taylor.  Coach G explained, "I did not address the injury with the team at all during the game.  They were, and continued to be focused on what we needed to do on the court to win the game."

With each opportunity, Post increased the lead.  Down the stretch and being in the bonus free throw shooting situation, Katelyn Elmore, Skylar Jones and Haily Berry were perfect from the charity stripe and added six points to the score.  Jones' shots put the Lady Lopes up by 10, 41-31 at the 1:57 mark.  She was the games' leading scorer with 12.  Matti Smith scored 11 and Berry had 8.

Both teams had two players foul out.

Speaking of fouling out, the Post JV girls started the game with six players and with about 4:00 left in the game, they were down to four.  The final four played their hearts out to win 30-27.

It was an exciting night at the arena.
