Lopes, Broncos to Play for Area Title

Pep Rally - 2:00 Friday @ Courthouse

Published Nov. 20, 2012 @ 9:51 p.m.

The Post Athletic Booster Club has asked for your presence at the pep rally for the Bold Gold Antelopes football team on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Garza County Courthouse.

After the Lopes are inspired and energized by the rally, the boosters will, with your permission, paint your vehicle windows in support of the Antelopes as the players prepare to leave for the game.

Sounds like a good time to send off the the 2-2A, Division II District Champions as they head toward Abilene to play in the Area round of the 2012 playoffs at Clyde's Bulldog Stadium against the Sonora Broncos Friday at 7:30 p.m.  Clyde is less than 15 miles east of Abilene on Interstate-20.  Click here for a map.

The game can be heard on PostSportsRadio.com and will be simulcast on KSSL radio at 107.3 and 94.1 FM.

The Broncos, the home team for the contest, are on a four game win streak after defeating Ballinger in the bi-district game last Friday, 35-10 at San Angelo.  They have an 8-3 season record.  Sonora finished second in District 3-2A behind Alpine.  Post has won five in a row going undefeated in district finishing the regular season with a 9-1 record and are coming off a bye week.

According to reports, the teams are mirror images of each other.  Both run the same offense with their money play being the option and both are young teams with few seniors.

The main senior Bronco to watch is running back Darien Lopez (#1) who is comparable to Post's D.J. Brown.  Last week he carried the ball nine times for 140 yards including an 81 yard touchdown.  Brown and Lopez competed in the 200 meter dash at the regional meet last Spring and Lopez advanced to the State Meet.

As far as history, Post has only played Sonora twice: losing in 1998, 14-7 and winning 35-28 in 2009 at Sweetwater.

The winner of Friday's contest will advance to the Regional round against either Cisco or Canadian.  They play Friday at 2:00 p.m. in Plainview.

The Clyde stadium was built in 2009, seats 3500 people and the playing surface is artificial turf.  The Antelopes will be on the visitors (east) side.  Fortunately colors at the stadium are black and gold.

Weather for Friday in Clyde is expected to be 60 degrees for a high with a 10% chance of rain.  Kick-off temperature may be close to 50 degrees.

Go Lopes, beat Sonora!
