Spring Sports Season Ready to Bloom

"Meet" the diamond teams on Tuesday

Published Feb. 20, 2012 @ 11:32 a.m.

West Texas Spring sporting events are both numerous and challenging.

Have you ever tried to hit a curve ball with a 40 + mph dust storm blowing in you eyes?  Or, run the 400 meter run with the wind at your back and when you make the turn it hits you in the face?  Me neither, but many of our young athletes have experienced such situations.

With all the hot air aside, this week is full of "opening days" for the Spring sporting schedules.

Today, Monday, is the first official games for both the Lady Lopes softball and the Antelope baseball teams.  The girls are at Tahoka and the boys are home against Tahoka.

Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. the Post Athletic Booster Club is sponsoring “Meet the Lopes/Lady Lopes” baseball and softball teams at David Nichols Park. Post High School athletes and coaching staff will be introduced and there will be a “long ball” contest giving you a chance to support the programs.

Later this week, Thursday through Saturday, Coach Jerry Pyles and his team will host the annual Norm Cash Clash baseball tournament at David Nichols Park.  On the same days, first year head coach Toby Allen take his L-Lopes to play in a the Sweetwater Softball tourney.

The runners, throwers and jumpers get into action this week too.  The first track and field meet is for the junior high athletes at Olton on Thursday.  Then on Saturday, the big kids are in action also at Olton.  (This will be a opportunity for our track/football athletes to get comfortable with the infield/football field since it looks as though we will play the Mustangs in a district football game there in the fall.)

We hope there's some net jumping this Thursday as the high school tennis team will compete at Levelland.

So, let's hope and pray for less wind and dust this Spring.  But, I wouldn't mind a couple of rain outs.  Go Lopes!

(Keep up with the schedules of all the activities on The Garza Post "Events" page.)
