Post Basketball vs. Coahoma Round-up

JV Boys Win in Overtime

Published Jan. 23, 2012 @ 5:57 p.m.

COAHOMA - Free throws were the Achilles heal for the varsity Antelopes in a loss to Coahoma, 63-55, in Friday's District away 3-2A match-up.

The Lopes won the first quarter 15-9 shooting perfectly from the free throw line hitting eight.  Post, now 0-7 in district, then lost focus and went on to make only 13 of 32 the rest of the game for a free throw shooting percentage of 53.

Meanwhile the Bulldogs took advantage of the free shot hitting 15 of 20 for a 75% average.

The evenly matched teams played a rough and tumble game scoring a similar number of points from the field:

Antelope Corbin McDonald was the game's high scorer with 21, 14 in the second half.  Taylor Soto made 13 points and Dalton Holly had 9.  Coahoma's Tanner Ruiz scored 19 and Ryan Reid had 14.

The home team started the fourth quarter up 46-41 and slowly pulled away in the last minutes from the charity stripe hitting 10 of 11 free shots to Post's 10 of 19.

Against the one team Post beat in the first round of district 3-2A play, the Lady Lopes lost control of the game against the Coahoma Bulldogettes in the second quarter last Friday when they were outscored 13-3 therefore giving the 'Ettes a 27-12 lead at halftime.  Coahoma's Jennifer Castilaw made 8 of her game high 22 points in the second.

Post came back in the second half matching Coahoma with 28 points, but the halftime lead was too much to make up and the final score was 55-41.

Post was led by Haily Berry's 13, Shirley Araiza's 12 and Sara Greer's 8 points.  Bulldogette Minnie Goodblanket scored 19 points, 11 in the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogettes got their first district victory now matching the L-Lopes record of 1-8.

The junior varsity boys' game was the gem of the evening when Post came from behind to win in overtime, 37-32.

Lopes guard Dylan Pearson came up with a clutch 3-point shot to tie the score at the end of regulation.  "The guys fought back after being down 8 points at half to force overtime," commented Coach Billy Quinn.  Brian Smith and Carson Kirkpatrick contributed 10 points each to lead the Antelopes to victory.  Quinn added "it was a great team win and team effort."
