Two hours west of Post in Denver City, Texas is where the 2012 District 3-2A track and field meet will take place and where high school athletes will find out whether or not they get to run, jump or throw for another day after the meet.
This season has been an exceptional year for the Post High School programs with the girls and boys varsity and the boys JV teams finishing in the top five, usually higher, in each event leading up the district meet.
Both the Lady Lopes and the Antelopes hope to continue that success Friday at Denver City.
"If the girls perform as well as I know they can, I think they have a great shot at being district champs," said Coach Richard Soliz.
Coach Beau Riker added "we have high expectations for all of our teams this year. I believe that we have a good shot at winning all three divisions (varsity boys and girls and JV boys) at District."
The top three finishers in each event will advance to the Region 1 meet set for April 27-28 in Odessa's Ratliff Stadium.
According to their best times or distances this season, Post may qualify a few athletes for the regional meet including: Corbin McDonald in the triple jump, high jump and the 100 meter dash; Darren "D.J." Brown in the long jump and the 200 meter dash; Taylor Soto in the high jump and the 300 meter hurdles; the 4 x 100 meter relay with Brown, Nathaniel Gill, Steven Howard, and McDonald; and the 4 x 200 meter relay with Vance Blair, McDonald, Matthew Soto, and Brown.
The Lady Lopes with the right stats entering the meet are: Haily Berry in the long jump, triple jump and the 200 meter dash; Kimberly Rivera in the 3200 meter run and the 1600 meter run; Kelbie Oden in the high jump and the long jump; Andi Soliz in the 800 meter run; and the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 meter relays with Oden, Bethany Curtis, Matti Smith, and Berry.
Coach Soliz said "I have been giving the girls a printout of their individual results after each track meet so they can see themselves improving. I've also posted a graph which shows the regional qualifiers' times from the 2011 and 2010 district meets. The girls know that they are in good shape to qualify for regionals. They know it's up to them to make it happen."
Post coaches think the athletes to watch for from the other schools are Shay Felton from Slaton, Desiree Gutierrez and Kacie Whitley of Roosevelt, Shahala Hawkins from Denver City and Ty Johnson of Forsan
Friday's District 3-2A meet is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. with the preliminary running events. The field activities should start at 1:30 and the finals for the running events should get going by 6:00 p.m.
